Episode 11 l Season 2: Improving Access to SLP Services: A Cross-Cultural & Service Learning Effort

Highlights from this episode:

In the highlights section we will be choosing words, ideas, and feelings that we are taking away from each conversation. We discussed:

Barriers to access to SLP services start with the lack of diversity in our field. Dr. Resendiz discusses the demographics of schools in Texas (50% Latinx) and how they don't match the demographics of service providers (6% Latinx). But a brighter more diverse future for our field is possible!

Service learning programs as a way to connect communities and institutions.

Inter-professional collaborations, Dr. Resendiz talks about her community partners in this project: Austin Smiles, a non-profit organization based out of Austin, TX and Instituto Salvadoreno de Rehabilitacion Integral (ISRI) [Salvadoran Institute of Integral Rehabilitation].

Self-reflection is key at any stage of our careers.

Community is everything. Finding your community, connecting, and serving your community can lead to amazing things.
