Highlights from this episode:
In the highlights section we will be choosing words, ideas, and feelings that we are taking away from each conversation. We discussed:
On this episode Dr. Ianessa Humbert shares her story. Her story is one of resilience, self-actualization, and strength. Dr. Humbert takes us through her experience as a daughter of immigrants who later became an immigrant to the U.S. herself. She connects those experiences to how she's been able to navigate a field that is 92% white - and she shares how her story - and the story of those before her, propel her in building new spaces for herself and other SLPs.
Dr. Humbert shares her experience with allyship during a time that she was being targeted by an ethics complaint. The position of "ally" is a earned through actions and not self-appointment. Dr. Humbert's approach to performative allyship is so clear and refreshing she posits: why do you have to say that you are an ally... "I should already know!"
Dr. Humber left ASHA but she has not left her skills or her passion for our field behind. She is actively pursuing the betterment of our field. SDI is one of the ways she continues to be a presence in the field with the goal to elevate our profession.
"Be better clinicians in a system that won't let us" - Dr. Humbert
We are thrilled that she took the time to share her wisdom with us! Dr. Humbert is an accomplished scientist and entrepreneur in the areas of swallowing and swallowing disorders but her expertise and her outlook for our field applies to every single one of us.
Last words: Do something!, Make your own solution, Stop internalizing other people's bull-, "Let people do what they want to do so you can see what they'd rather do".
